Artist Statement

The experiences leading up until now shaped my perspective and how the world “sees” me. My sense of self did not feel like it belonged to me, but rather to be part of a collective. To grow up as an Asian-American woman is to be shaped and conformed to societal and cultural expectations. Instead of following my own intuition, I often suppressed my own identity and followed what was expected of me even at the expense of my mental and physical health. My art practice is a social commentary and critiques the perception of how art is undervalued in this modern age– and how this concept influenced how I view myself. This has led me to critically investigate the way my own identity has been shaped.

My work focuses on the relationship between found objects and culture in drawings, paintings, and sculptures- utilizing current events and movements, using my art as a vehicle to narrate and document my thoughts and experiences. The subjects in my pieces are often an amalgamation of mental notes and the imagination is often derived from ordinary objects. Simultaneously, has helped me investigate and develop my own identity as an artist.

During my time at San Jose State University, I began to experiment with the way materials react to one another and took an interest in metamorphosis and pictorial poetry, with a particular focus on processes of prefabricating and creation.
